So much for that. I decided Thursday night to tell the Bossman that I'd be willing to accept the position. Friday, I couldn't get a minute with him so I composed an e-mail, but didn't send it on the off-chance that I'd be able to grab him. I went to the faculty meeting where he stated that he is going to look into alternative administrative structures for the department and perhaps we don't need someone in that capacity right now. Umm, yeah. After the faculty meeting, I put the disclaimer at the top of the e-mail stating that I wrote it before the faculty meeting, but with the discussion of changes in the administrative structure, all I have to say is keep me posted. He came by my desk before I could send it and asked if I'd thought about things. I showed him the e-mail, he said that was good and to send it to him, it can be part of the discussion of the structure. Then he starts talking about some of his ideas and yadda yadda yadda, I still know nothing and now it looks like my receiving that position is two years away. Long story short, for half a day I had a better job.
In other news, my mother called me on Friday night to tell me that my grandmother is worse. Apparently she had a lucid moment and my mother showed her the letter from the doctor citing dementia. My grandmother told my mother that she wants to die and then my mother told my grandmother that she was there to help her live longer. I mentioned nursing homes and my mother said that she couldn't do that, it's her mother. It looks like I'll be going down, probably in late October, to see the situation for myself.
