What A Week

One of my coworkers found out last Friday that her son's uncle has been sexually abusing him for two-three years. After watching a video at school last week on abuse, her son told his teacher that the video said it was OK to tell. They call the police and the child protective services. That was Tuesday and they didn't tell his mom until Friday. Because it happened in a different county, the other county called our county and asked them to handle the questioning of her son.

When she went to the school on Friday, she was met by the cop and the principal of a different school since her son's principle was out of town (but there via conference call). She was told that they would question him on Monday and videotape it so he only had to do it once. She was not supposed to talk to him about it over the weekend because they didn't want the videotape to come off as rehearsed. The poor kid's birthday was on Saturday.

She wasn't allowed in the room, but she watched from behind the mirror. He went in and told the officer, she left to throw up three times. This is such a good and bright kid. He just got into the gifted and talented program at school and is very personable. When the cop asked if he'd be afraid to go with his dad, he said, "Nope." Which kinda took the cop by surprise. When asked why, he said, "Because you said you'll take care of it." His mom told me the cop came up to her afterward and said that there's nothing like a 9 year old to call you on your shit. If he's not safe, it's the cop's fault. With her angry, panicked, angry, depressed, and angry visits to my office all week it's been quite a week.

Add to that an e-mail from a friend about her 22 year old nephew's last moments with leukemia this past week and it's been quite a week.

And the idiot upstairs with her updates on her husband and his failing health (no more than 6 months to live), it's been quite a week.

And, so as not to end on a depressing note, it's cold again. Woke up to 3 degrees and a windchill of minus 12. Ends in sight with tonight's low of 5, tomorrow's of 10, Sunday's of 15 and Monday's of 24. At least it won't be for three weeks like the last cold snap. Utility bills of nearly $400 is a bit excessive.

Oh and Michelle's kid Megan is walking! About time!
